Potent ideas need not be spoken to be impactful.
In fact an idea communicated without words has the opportunity to penetrate deeper, to tap directly into our subconscious, to stay with us longer. The empty space left by not speaking then magnifies the importance of what is said.
Perhaps it sounds complicated, but it’s not. Let me give you a few examples.
In the violin studio there are two hooks. One low, one high. Do you need to tell the child where to hang their coat?
Every week you start the lesson the same way. After tuning you put their violin into rest position, match their posture, look straight into their eyes and start counting. Any need for instructions?
When a student enrolls in your studio you give their parent a list of the music materials you will use throughout your time together. At the end of the lesson you ask them to bring Book 8 and Flesch next week. Any back and forth about what and where to buy?
I’m obsessed with this idea of silence. How do you say the most with the least? How do you travel a great distance without moving at all? How do you clap with one hand?
